NILU – The Climate and Environmental Research Institute

NILU is a non-profit, internationally recognized research institute with extensive expertise in composition of the atmosphere, climate change, air quality, environmental toxins, health effects, sustainable systems, circular economy, and digitalization.

NILU's Health Effects Laboratory provides internationally recognized expertise in human toxicology and New Approach Methodologies (NAMs). The laboratory employs advanced in vitro models, high-content imaging, molecular and cellular assays, and mechanistic toxicology approaches to evaluate the human health hazards of chemicals and advanced materials, thereby supporting the development of Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) solutions.

Within ILCA4SSbD, NILU leads Task 4.3: Tools for Cost-effective Environmental Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA). The institute contributes throughout the entire project lifecycle, including strategic analysis and framework development, case study definition, AI-supported LCA methodology development, platform integration and validation, industrial demonstrations, and alignment with European SSbD policies and regulatory frameworks.
